Mememage Chrome extension

The Mememage extension collects nothing. It has no accounts, no analytics, no telemetry, and no tracking. Every check runs in your browser, by math alone.

What the extension does

The extension reads the Mememage bar in an image. The bar holds an identifier and a content hash. The extension puts a small sticker on each image that has a bar. When you click a sticker, the extension can fetch the image's record and check its hash against the bar. All of this runs on your machine.

What we collect

What stays on your machine

• Your settings. Your record sources, the timeout, the sticker mode, and the anchor side are saved with Chrome's storage.sync. Chrome syncs them across your own signed-in Chrome profile. They are never sent to us.
• Image decoding. The extension reads image pixels to find and decode the bar. This happens in the browser. The pixels are not uploaded anywhere.

Network requests the extension makes

The extension makes two kinds of network request, and only these:

• Image bytes. To decode a bar, the extension reads the image. It requests the image with the browser cache, so this is usually a cache hit, not a new download. It sends no cookies or credentials.
• A record lookup, only when you click. When you click a sticker and choose verify or fetch, the extension requests <source>/<identifier>.json from the record sources you configure. It does this only for the identifier of the image you clicked. It sends no cookies or credentials. If you set no sources, the extension makes no record lookups.

A record source is any host you choose. A default install includes two public mirrors, the Internet Archive and souls.mememage.art. You can change or clear them at any time. The extension never trusts a source: a record is always verified by its hash against the bar.

Permissions and why

• Host access (all sites). The extension shows a sticker on an image with a bar on any page. So it needs to read images on the pages you visit. It reads image pixels only, to decode the bar. It does not read page text, form data, or your browsing history.
• Storage. To save your settings on your machine.
• Context menus. To add the right-click "Verify with Mememage" item.

Children

The extension is a tool for anyone. It collects no data, so it collects no data from children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version appears on this page with a new date. The extension is open-source, so every change is public in the source.
